Dear Supporter,

When I was in middle school, my father, who had studied a little bit of coding back in Mexico, entered me into a hackathon. From that moment on, I knew exactly what I wanted to do: I wanted to study Computer Science.

My name is Gerardo Rivera, a graduate of Paly’s Class of 2021 and a recent December 2025 graduate of UC Merced. My journey to a degree wasn't just about learning to code; it was about navigating a path that often felt uncertain. I faced hurdles that many of my peers didn't like the inability to work during my first two years of college.

But I wasn't alone. Rise Together Education (RTE) was there for me every step of the way.

When I was choosing a college, financial aid was my biggest concern. I didn’t want to graduate burdened by loans. RTE provided the financial assistance that made UC Merced a reality for me, but they gave me something even more valuable: mentorship.

My mentor, Grainger Marburg, has been a constant in my life for the past four years. He didn't just help me navigate academic situations; he was there with life advice and even relationship advice that helped put things into perspective. Having someone like Grainger in my corner made the difficult times felt manageable, like the summer I had to take three math classes at once to stay on track.

Because of the support I received, I was able to give back. I volunteered at the Monarch Center at UC Merced, supporting other students.

Today, as I look toward a career in Computer Science, I am a different person than the high schooler who just hung out at lunch with friends. I am someone who understands the importance of community and resilience.
