Hosted by Homewood Suites in Palo Alto, for the fourth year running, on July 30th, RTE held a College 101 Workshop to help incoming scholars prepare for their college career. This year, our RTE alumnus, Alexa Morales, presented information on the various aspects of college, such as reaching out to counselors and professors, roommate communications, and safety tips that students should know to navigate college successfully. Her presentation was followed by RTE mentor John Fitton and Student Representative Allison Ma, who provided an exceptional Financial Literacy overview. Paul Hung, a first year scholar who is attending Pima Community College commented, “College 101 was a very informative session that gave students a basic layout for college life. We had two main guest speakers who educated us about living with roommates and finances/budgeting. One of the most valuable parts of College 101 Workshop was meeting with people who have already been in college. I was able to meet people who are in the field(s) I am interested in, providing valuable information and tips”. The event was followed by the annual Meet & Greet event in which the whole RTE community - scholars, alumni, mentors, student representatives, board members, donors, and community members came together to connect. As noted by Tida Violante, RTE President, “The College 101 Workshop this year was the best yet! In addition to the usual topics covered, we spent extra time on the financial pitfalls of adulting, scams, and how to think through budgeting. It was followed by the Annual Summer Meet & Greet with the larger community and current and former RTE scholars. It really is the best part of the year to see the community come together to support our young adults and the organization, which is now in our 10th year! We have many college graduates who come back to extend a helping hand. It is heartening to see so many people taking time out of their day to support us!”
