Business Administration (Major: Accountancy, Minor: Psychology)
Paly Class of 2023
My college journey started during my junior year when I took summer classes for Geometry. The knowledge I gained there enriched my understanding and also contributed to a significantly improved GPA (3.8+). I initially wanted to major in Psychology, but recognizing my interest in data and proficiency with numbers, my TA Ms. Andrea steered me towards Accounting. I am grateful that she saw potential in me that I hadn't yet recognized in myself. The University of Central Missouri perfectly aligned with my criteria, making it a top choice. Along with my Business Administration degree, I also plan to become a Resident Advisor and Tutor on campus soon.
As a first-generation college student, the academic guidance and advice from Paly were invaluable. Now at UCM, I actively pursue uncomfortable and challenging paths, applying the mindset developed with Paly's help. I built a great support network with my teachers and mentors. Grainger, my mentor from Rise Together Education (RTE), provided regular guidance on my strengths and areas for improvement. My brother Sammy, also affiliated with RTE, served as another mentor. Alongside Ms. Andrea, many of my freshmen and sophomore year teachers played a significant role in supporting me. Their challenging yet positive approach to my grades is something I am grateful for. Two standout classes for me this term are Macroeconomics and Professional Speaking/Presentation. The Speaking/Presentation course, similar to the AP Language class at Paly, taught me a new approach to public speaking. My Macro professor is both passionate and an excellent teacher, making the subject exciting. UCM's outstanding support resources guide me to see business holistically and instill values like interpersonal skills, community support, a growth mindset, and sustainability. Support from both Paly and UCM has led me to embrace seeking help, develop positive habits, and shift my overall mindset. Now, with a more matured outlook, I'm focused on leadership, positive impact, improving lives, and building meaningful connections. After graduation I want to be a budget or accounting manager for a business. I might also do a startup with friends that we have been planning after college. I would advise current & future Paly students to take more courses for college credit, both in community college and AP classes. At UCM I realized many students took at least 1 college course per semester. Additionally, I would also suggest they be proactive. If a situation is unfavorable and you can resolve it, take fast action. For instance, I filled out the forms for financial aid incorrectly initially. Once I was aware of the errors, I requested help from the financial aid center to resolve and correct my application immediately. |
